Is Banking Broken or Just Wounded?

Recent Op Ed columnists have been suggesting that banking’s business model is either broken or badly mangled. With massive write downs of securitized assets and dramatic increases in loan loss provisions, major banks like Citibank (C), UBS (UBS), and others are scrambling to raise capital to meet capital level requirements. Prior year record profit levels now appear to be a fool’s game of excessive optimism. Is the banking model broken? Or, is the banking industry just wounded? How pervasive is this condition? When will the industry recover from the current mess? What affect will the current situation have on its customers and its suppliers?
