3Q2008 Earnings: Good, Mediocre, Bad & Ugly

On November 24th, the FDIC released 3Q2008 financial results for 8,394 insured banks and thrifts. The FDIC’s Quarterly Banking Profile report contained no encouraging news or analysis. Problem institutions increased from 117 to 171 during the quarter and failed institutions for 2008 increased from 13 to 22. However, many institutions have continued to perform well as institutional performance is separating into one of four categories: good; mediocre; bad; and ugly. The bad and ugly categories cover those institutions that are either facing very difficult or impossible odds of long term survival.
Which institutions are holding up well? Are large, medium or small institutions faring better than average? What will be the impact on the industry in 2009?
